"I'm not trying to," she shrugged. "Just that if you keep staring at the same problem from the same angle, it's not going to change."
She had done the same with her students. When something was too frustrating for them, she often asked they take a break and go back to it. They often did much better after their break because they could relax a little and not stress. Though, stress and end of the city seemed to go hand in hand. All she knew, was she couldn't abandon the city to that fate. If there was something she could do to help, she would do it. Because she had seen firsthand what almost destroyed the city the first time.

"...How are your kids doing anyways?"
Talking about the same things was going to make him, angrier. She had already witnessed one of Disparion's demons, probably a high rank, do their worst. The fear of unleashing his wrath on her when she was trying to help would only solidify his worst fears. That he was created for destruction as opposed to just healing DNA like the professor had written about him. He shuffled his fork around, mulling different ideas. Working alone had dug him into a hole. But what point? He had one foot in the grave as far as his father was concerned.

"Good," she replied. "They've got a field trip to the museum this week. That'll be a handful."
Her kids were good. They meant well, but when they got excited, they could be a bit of a handful to deal with. Especially since they had a field trip to look forward to. Their focus was a bit shot. She also had to go to the store at some point and pick up some fixings for sandwiches, for the few students she knew who wouldn't be able to pack their own lunches because of family situations. She had paid out of pocket to make sure that each student could go, regardless of financial status. Because she wanted them to have every opportunity they could.

“Yikes. I get lost in there enough, running after kids is another story.”
Especially given to how large her class could be. He estimated the median number of third graders, fifteen. That’s a lot of heads to keep track of. He wasn’t exaggerating about the getting lost part, either. Criminals often hid there or robbed from the exhibits. The wings blended into one another, and it would take a team to track them. One time, he and Sunshine were literally running circles until they realized they were in the wrong wing.

"I'll have a few parent volunteers," Jane said.
She greatly appreciated the parents that could come and assist with the field trip. She would have been on her own with a class of twenty students on her own. Someone was bound to get too excited and try and run off at some point. It was inevitable. But having a few extra adult heads would help her keep her sanity. She would have to do something nice for those parents. It just meant getting them something nice like a gift card for coffee or something. Everyone loved Nevermore.

“Good,”
Shadow’s approval of her choice rang clear. It was rare that parents helped out in Other based classrooms. Some parents had pulled their children out because they didn't want their child associating with “their kind”. Jane had the stubbornness of putting kids forward.

"We'll see how well they do," Jane said. "Last time the two parents who volunteered used it as a social hour to catch up and barely paid any attention to the kids."
The two women had given her the dirtiest look when she told them to stop gossiping and mind the children. She had barred them from coming back. Not in her classroom. Not with her students. She took her job seriously. Those kids depended on her for education and safety when they were out of the classroom. Nothing was more unsafe than unattended children in public places where people could steal them away under the distracted eye of their caregivers.

Shadow’s angled eyes became sharper. It was astounding to him how adults could act worse than children when it cane to authority. But to defy the woman teaching your child multiplication tables? That was a low blow. He could handle drunkards or defiant people thinking they were in the right. Offending someone like a nurse or a teacher added to his rage. Unfortunately, he could feel Disparion’s influence playing with his anger. He clenched his fists, forcing the demon anger back and he silenced a curse word with a mouthful of curry.

"One of the moms is bringing juice boxes and pudding cups for snacks. And there's a dad who was a former marine. I think we're okay. The worst we might face is a paper cut."
Coupled with Jane's sandwiches (varying from peanut butter and jelly to lunchmeat) her students should be covered. As for the marine dad, he was the ideal parent. There for his kids, attending PTO meetings, he even showed up to the bake sale with an apron (made by his kid). So she felt there wouldn't be a repeat of the last field trip. Just because there were some bad parents out there it didn't mean they were all bad.

Parents providing snacks? Good. She had some awesome ones to replace the shithole gossipers. The anger lowered into a simmer, and as Shadow scooted the meat around, he caught a glimpse at Jane. If him smiling was rare, the same could be said here. There was more than a smile, though. There was a glow in her blue eyes. Her face was breaking into a wide smile. Not unlike...
“Has anyone ever told you how...bright you get when you talk about kids? I mean right now, you’re beaming.”
The compliment just cane out.

"Well, yeah. I love working with kids," Jane said, a little surprised.
She had never really given it much thought. Trolls naturally loved children. Her and her father both were examples of how far they were willing to go to keep kids happy and safe. Though, to be fair, Jane didn't have a tendency of trying to adopt her students. That being said, a few kids felt comfortable enough to see her outside of class (mostly after school) to talk about things in their life. One of her students was a faunus with rabbit ears who kids in other classes picked on. She had another who would turn invisible when he was nervous or shy. She was helping him gain confidence. Another student was all but helping his mother raise his three siblings and he was learning things from Jane after class to help his family like financial tips or how to help his mom get a better job.
"I... didn't exactly have it easy in foster care. All the adults just saw an angry little kid who needed to let go," she explained, "It was less about what I wanted and more about what the adults wanted. When I left my foster family, I decided to go into a career to help kids. Being a kid is hard. Being an adult is worse. I figured the least I could do was let kids be kids while I could."

And considering the throw into the foster system was bullshit, Jane had every right to be angry. Aggressive juveniles were difficult to work with in general. Shadow refilled his tea, coming to grips with her life in the care. Giving back because she didn’t want children ending up in a bad place like she had been. He admired her strength. Most people would defy authority or get into trouble. She chose to teach around her mistakes.
“I never was a kid,” he said. “Or at least what I understand that is.” He clearer his throat, realizing he was probably sounding confusing and started over.
“My memories about my past were taken by a Demon. I’m getting pieces of them back, but a few things remained consistent. I was created in an abandoned lab. My only friend was a twelve year old girl,Maria. She wasn’t a threat to anyone. All she wanted was to leave the laboratory and visit the city. She never had the chance...”

Jane found herself staring at him. An experiment. His existence was by someone else's hand. But she supposed the same could be said for every living thing. Someone else played a part in their creation. Intentionally or not. She supposed it depended on what he was made to do. Still, the raw hurt and emotion bleeding through his voice was enough to make even her heart clinch. The way he spoke, she had gotten hurt for absolutely no reason.
"I'm sorry about Maria." she said sincerely.

“She was my motive for becoming a cop. I couldn't save her, but I could at least save others...”
He hadn’t realized that tears were forming until his vision glazed over and the sting in his eyes cane full force. He had only showed vulnerability in front of three people. Willingly, that is. The stress and exhaustion were coming to a head, too. Maria would never want him to destroy the city she loved so much, and yet he had been created to do so. It was an unfair price in his creation.

"I think she would be proud of you," Jane admitted. "I mean, if you're willing to work on a case for someone like me, you have to be."
Jane knew her distaste for cops was no secret. Yet, when she had a problem. Shadow was the one she went to. Even more so, he agreed, without any question or any qualms. Just seeing her as a person in trouble, not someone who had cause problems in the past. She specifically recalled a few moments she had outright yelled at him. Namely at the Lafayette ball. After all that, he had her help with an arrest, they went drinking and now dinner...
