"My life on the streets gave me a bit more respect for Others."
He didn't dare bring up how Maria's death impacted his view of humans. Apart from the select few, he was grown to despise them for their selfish actions. There were times he didn't even bother taking a case because the crime was committed by human greed, not an uncontrollable monster. He stirred idly at his plate, watching the red curry bleed onto some meat that hadn't been covered.
"I guess it's something we have in common; working our way up the ranks from being at the bottom of the barrel."

"We let our experiences shape us." she admitted. "Maybe more than we should..."
She was just as guilty of doing that as Shadow. She was trying to overcome it. She thought she had until that demon woman stepped in and knocked her down a few pegs. She was still trying to become better than she was. There was one way that she had to do it. She had been procrastinating on it, putting it off, putting it off, trying to avoid it for as long as she could. But if she really was some vessel for disgust, she was going to try to purge herself from as many of those things as possible.
"Um, hey, I'm... sorry for all the stuff I said... You know, at the Lafayette party." she said. "I was just mad."

“My memory may be bad, but I know that happened two years ago. I’ve probably forgotten all about it to still be mad.”
It was one way to accept an apology. Besides, a minor spat was nothing to hold a grudge over. He was also knowing Jane as a person, not just a citizen needing to be saved. Acquaintance was turning into friend.

"I know. But I needed to get it off my chest." she said. "Clear the air so to speak."
But at least Shadow had forgiven her for her hastily spoken words. She smiled. She did feel a little better now that she had gotten that out in the open. She didn't feel like it was her - the anti-cop teacher and the cop. Just her and Shadow. Two people that were looking past job titles and species status. She poked her food around the plate. Things tasted good but she was barely focusing on them with present company.

The corner of Shadow's mouth puckered, and it wasn't from chewing. That corner widened, until the rarest thing appeared on his face. A smile.
The whole scene right now was making him smile. The two most unlikely people to be sitting down for dinner, having a conversation that didn't end in bickering or yelling about something ridiculous. It was a teacher who was half troll and a homunculus cop with the blood of the devil pumping through his veins. If there had been any past issues between the two fo them, it was water under the bridge. The better part was Disparion's influence wasn't going to mess up his chance of getting fuel.

"Uh huh, sure, laugh it up," she said.
But it was good to know that he didn't hate her for her harsh words. That things were okay between them. She still wasn't sure where this left her since she really wasn't a huge fan of cops and yet, she was spending an awful lot of time with one. But she was going to play it cool and see where things went. There was no point in worrying over something that might not be an issue.

"Take pride that you actually got me to laugh so soon. Took me a month to stop glaring at the Colt brothers."
Yes, the days of hating humanity had started with those two. He had joined the force and would avoid them at all costs. His first real "friend" had been his assigned partner Ralph LaCouer, who was now a P.I. in Bellerouge. He hadn't spoken to the Giant in a while. Maybe when and Jane were done, he'd give his old partner a call and see how things were going. Outside of Sunshine, he had been the best partner Shadow had.

"I'll keep that in mind," she said.
She found herself smiling in return. This was almost like an outing with friends. Wouldn't she have done the same with Yang or Namine? They'd sit there, laugh and poke fun at each other. She eased back in her seat. They were having fun, not something she honestly expected from Shadow. Because of the whole cop thing and partially because he came off as rather standoffish. No one wanted to hang out with the guy who could probably make kids cry with a glare. Except now it seemed he had a soft spot for kids so maybe he made bad guys cry?

“Hey, is Namine okay? I saw her in Magnolia Road a while back. She seemed happier.”
He wouldn have said hello, but he had been too grumpy and not in the socializing mood. That and at the time he had been on duty, asking questions about a possible “bit and run” victim. The only other person that knew her on a more personal level was Jane. There had been talk of a guard dog, and if any could confirm gossip, it was an adoptive sister.

"She's doing great. She apparently adopted this giant beast of a dog." Jane laughed. "It's the size of a large dog now and bound to get bigger."
Adrien had not been thrilled. Apparently he was more of a cat person so when he saw the dog trailing behind Namine like a new Shadow, he all but leapt out of his skin. That in itself had been hilarious. But the dog was doing surprising good for her. Aqua was showing her how to train it so that the dog recognized her as his partner. He would likely tolerate Namine's friends and family, but devote itself fully to Namine and her alone. It was bringing out Namine's confidence more, having the creature with her.
"She's just having problems finding a name."

“Good. She needs some four legged support. No offense, but as protective and supportive as you are, I don’t take you as the kind who jumps and smothers people with love with their tongue. As for the name thing, she should talk to Jenna. She’s part of K-9 unit, could use some friends herself.”
He didn’t bring up the secret Jenna had told him. The only thing he understood was her loneliness. The dog, Jenna, and Namine sounded sweet.

"It's a good dog." Jane agreed. "Maybe she could? It's up to them whether they meet up."
Jane wanted Namine to be her own person. Free and independent of anyone else making decisions for her. But she was timid and meek, often giving up her say in the matter if it meant someone else was happy. As if to avoid an argument or draw someone's ire. She could be easily cowed into submission. Hopefully she would develop enough confidence to move past that someday. But for now, she was how she was. There was no changing it. Yet.

“I’ll bring it up to her. Then we’ll see where it goes.”
The last spoonful wood curry was put in his mouth. The pit in his stomach was gone. His senses were waking up. The plate, ringed with red lines looking like blood, was picked up by the waiter who left to return with the check. Quickly, Shadow grabbed his card, looking at Jane.
“You paid for drinks last time. I’ll cover this one.”

"I didn't invite you out here to be a meal ticket," Jane protested before sighing. "But... if it makes us even..."
Still, she was glad Shadow was listening. He looked better now that he had eaten, gotten something into his system. He still looked tired, but it's not like she had any power to make him sleep. One step at a time. If he was tired, he would sleep. She hoped anyways. Some people had really bad habits of ignoring any signs that their bodies were trying to tell them something was wrong. Sure, Shadow was on a deadline, but he had to actually live too.
"I guess if there's a next time it's my turn?"

"Exactly. No objections from me."
It was the best compromise Shadow could come up with. He would see Jane again, no doubt. Bellerouge was an average sized city. He would no doubt have an excuse to get out of the cop routine to...wait, why was he suddenly making plans and looking...forward...to seeing her again? The last time he had this kind of enthusiasm to hang out had been with Sunshine. No, he reminded himself, don't get too attached. In a few months, you'll be gone, and you'll never see her again.
