Fatigue was showing on Shadow's face. Stress was nothing new for him, he had been part of it for ten years. Yet for him to mute his phone to keep out all calls and all texts was something that he hadn't done since his rookie days. His eyes were red, and not just the hue of his irises this time. Each step was slow and he even stopped churning into his jets for a rush of speed. His stomach growled, desperate for food. The charts he was holding were scribbles upon scribbles until it looked like a tangle of words in red. He was at the library for the fifth time this week, hands hovering over the keyboard. What was so important for him to hardly eat, hardly sleep, and avoid social interaction like it was the plague?
The fear of Disparion. The clock was ticking, and if the professor's notes were right, the upcoming summer would be his return, and Shadow would bring it.
He was searching for any kind of hope, any chance that the professor had missed a detail in his studies. Nothing was coming positive. He had kept everything away from his friends. Even in regards to Riku and Sunshine's wedding, he stayed away, because the last thing he wanted to give them on the happiest day of their life was something to eclipse such happiness.

Jane didn't frequent the library. Not because she didn't like books. She adored books. She simply didn't have the time with her busy work schedule. At the same time, she was making time. She needed to figure out whatever it was that woman did to her. The pain she had felt, the anger and loathing towards everyone around her. She felt immensely guilty for it. The police were spread thin at the moment. They couldn't look into cold cases when the criminals from the prison break were still out there. Her father had spent so many years alone and unhappy, while she wasn't entirely happy with his choice in lover, who was she to deny him that same happiness?
She looked at her hand again. The marks were gone, but her skin ached with the phantom pains of it still being there. So she was turning to research what it was that happened. She was a 'Vessel of Disgust' for her obvious rage and distaste for Police and faeries. As she rounded the stacks to find books she needed, she was given pause. Shadow sat at one of the many tables, working at one of the computers. The first thought that registered with her was how tired he looked.
"Shadow?" her voice was soft and uncertain.

Shadow scowled at the college report he was reading. There had been reports of demons, some in high ranks. Those close to Disparion would have connections. The downside was the demon hierarchy was embalanced. Releasing a demon from its trap would break too many rules, even if it was for an interrogation. The college student had been reckless in the deals. Everything had been right, except for...a connection.
A voice called his name, and his already angled eyes furrowed. A librarian was the last person he needed to talk to. But instead he saw.
“Jane...”
Beneath the exhaustion and frustration making his voice raspier than it already was, there was a sense of relief.

"What are you doing here?" she asked.
She would have imagined him doing research at his office in the BPD. Not the library. Granted, maybe it wasn't work related. Wasn't he just as entitled to working in the library as she was for whatever purpose? She gave a tentative smile. She wasn't sure where she stood on things anymore. She thought she was 'getting better' with the whole misplaced distaste of all cops but after whatever that woman did to her, Jane found herself with lingering bitterness. Everything was suddenly much more confusing. Plus, how was she going to get any research done if a cop was watching her the entire time?

“Looking up demon hierarchy for an investigation. All the cases we had before dealt with lower types.”
He kept curt. If Jane was here for lesson plans, he didn’t want to keep her. Besides, he was telling the truth. It was an investigation. Just not one he was going to lay out with his fellow officers. Thrax had been, despite it, one of the lower ranks according to articles. Well...mid-high rung. Shadow opened another tab, studying a picture of an exorcism where the child’s red irises, not unlike his, glowered in the camera’s direction. But more interesting were the red words in Latin on the child’s arms. They weren’t tattoos nor were they self harm marks. They were imposed words, as if he had been stamped. He clicked another tab to type in a Latin translator. He didn’t care if it was shitty, it would be better than nothing

"Oh," she said awkwardly.
So he was looking for information on demons. Just like her. She shifted in her spot. She should say something, tell him her suspicions about that woman. It would take a lot of trust on her part, because she hadn't told her father. Mostly because she was ashamed that her own hatred towards his girlfriend helped cause whatever happened. She didn't even like the police officers. But Shadow seemed like the only one actually capable of doing his job. He actually gave a damn for people around him.
"Can... I talk to you about something?" she asked.

Shadow minimized the article. If this was a school library or run by anyone gruff or crotchety, they'd be thrown out for talking. Jane wanting to talk to him could have meant anything from having to vent to giving a legitimate crime. She had come to him when Omar had been kidnapped and that led him in organizing a search party. Honestly, he was the only cop she came to every time she had some sort of crime or a cry of distress. Each time she did bring up an issue, it was one that needed support. He grabbed a chair from a table close by and pulled it up, silently gesturing for her to sit and chat with him,

"I know you probably have other cases," Jane said slowly. "And more important things to worry about."
She took a seat across from him. She folded her arms across herself, uncomfortable with confiding with him. She didn't confide in anyone. Jane always made a point of making herself seem strong enough to handle anything that came her way. However, now, even she knew that she was in over her head. She didn't know what to do. She didn't know how to deal with whatever the woman did to her. She was still alive though so that counted for something.
"But I ran into this woman the other day and she... did something to me." Jane said. "She used magic or something to make herself look like my mom. But then something happened. I don't know what she did but... she said she marked me as a Vessel for Disgust. There's an area of the park that's just destroyed."

More important things? The most important things were personal affairs, and if his looks said anything, he was doing a bang-up job of it. He looked at her body language. She was trying to make herself smaller with her arms barring her body. This was a position he had seen many young people make when they were brought in for questioning. The position showed insecurity. Whatever Jane wanted to talk to him about, it was gnawing at her mind and breaking through her stubborness.
She described a woman that did something, and immediately Shadow tensed. Jane had seemed so on guard, unwilling to let anything touch her. How was it possible that she got tagged? The answer; the woman who got her had disguised herself as her mother. Then she did something involving disgust. Shaodw opened a writing document and began rapidly writing every she explained.
"We had a report come in about the park having a chunk taken out of it, too," he mused. He may have been on the brink of exhaustion, but he was aware of hearing some of the other officers being dispatched to check out damages. Some members of the parks and recreation were going to see what was destroyed. Once the investigation was done, a clue could be revealed."Did you see what she looked like before she disguised herself?"

"I was in the center of that." she said. "It felt like... like my skin was being burned away from the inside."
She had gone home, smelling of sulfer and brimstone. Jane had been terrified, not knowing what the woman had done to her, fearing that it was some dormant or slow killing spell. A sacrifice? She didn't want to think of it like that. There had to be a reason for what happened to her. Something was going on and as much as she hated to admit it, the only one capable of figuring it all out wasn't her. Shadow stood the best chance. Even now he was utilizing every tool he had at his disposal for a case.
"She came up to me disguised as my mom," she explained, "But I... had Namine draw her. She doesn't know this woman did something to me."
Jane pulled out the paper with the woman's drawing. She offered it to Shadow. The mere image of the ghost-like woman who had tricked her. Jane couldn't look at the image. It caused her too much discomfort.

Burned away? Burned from the inside. This was hell magic. He jotted it down in his notes, being extra careful to emphasize the burn part of the notes. Whoever this woman was, she may or may not be able to give some clues. Maybe even talk to her about getting out of the whole Disparion thing. Highly unlikely she'd help, though.
"Freaky," was the only comment he could make of the drawing. The woman was practically wavering, unable to ake out one certain shape. The only thing that stuck out was the intense stare being given. The stare was a big weapon Others used. Some used it for hypnosis, others used it as a means to show they were a threat. He fell into the latter category with his own bright red irises. He did a summary of the drawing, even including a note for a (see sketch my Namine nee LaRue) in the text.
"This...this is bad. But why attack you?" He dropped the questioning to sigh in relief, "I'm just glad you're okay."

"Yeah..." she said slowly. "And I think at some point she was speaking Latin? I mean, it's weird because you know, it's a dead language..."
It was probably the freakiest thing to ever happen to her, aside from her own mother's murder. She didn't make a habit of tracking down weird things. She didn't particularly stand out. She was a teacher for crying out loud. Her most exciting days were spent on her own, out of the classroom when the mood to go hunting had stricken her. Aside from that, she didn't break laws, she didn't run with the wrong crowds, she didn't talk out of line unless she was defending someone.
"I'm not sure," Jane said. "I've honestly never met her before now."

Latin...the only people in this town who spoke it were...if Jane was right in saying the chants were spoken only to her, then this woman was fluent in it. He added to the profile text and saved quickly. But it didn't make sense. Why would a demon track down Jane? She was a school teacher minding her own business. Demons also usually avoided trolls...or at least that was one interrogation had said.
"The only people who speak Latin are Demons. And you said something about turning yourself into a vessel of disgust, right?"
Shadow began skimming the piles of research in front of him. A psychology book fell from below, opening to a chapter titled 'Core Emotions'. A chart, with a sort of flower shape. There were five big circles, each a cooresponding color to a word. But in the far left hand corner, written in the green petal, was the word 'DISGUST'
Core emotions?
"But why would demons want anything with core emotions?" Shadow asked half to himself, half to Jane.

"That's right," she said. "She... made me feel... Well, it's not that she made me feel the anger and disgust. I suppose it's always been there... I'm trying to not be upset all the time but it's like whatever she did brought all of that to the surface."
It was never a secret she hated police. And yet, when this happened, she went right to Shadow. She didn't know what that said about her and her 'grudges'. She was confused and hurting. Something like this left a ding in her confidence as well. She was so used to being able to take care of herself that it put a chip on her shoulder to have to rely on someone else, especially when she was as scared as she was, though she was keeping that to herself.
"I'm not sure. I don't even know why she attacked me or why she didn't just kill me." Jane sighed.
She was happy to be alive. Though it worried her that she had become some cog in a bigger machine without her say so. That demon had a plan for her yet, whether as a vessel for another demon or something else entirely. Not knowing was terrible.

"Well, if she made those feelings of disgust come upward, something tells me she might have plans involving this." He pointed to the chart that had fallen open. "This demon will be targeting other people. I don't like thinking about it."
For once, his usual confidence or stoic attachment wavered. If what he was thinking was right, then this demon was on Disparion's side. He studied the picture again, and hit a search for 'shapeshifters'. The typical responses came up. There were stories told and passed about benevolent beings. Not much to it. Jane's disgust had been pretty openly expressed, so who else was on the radar? Could Ralph be a target because of his infamous anger? He set them aside and looked at Jane, seeing the fear in her wide
...Blue eyes. Maria's eyes.
"She didn't kill you because she was toying with you. Demons do it to their prey all the time," he looked away, "I've had one inside my head, too, bringing out things I didn't even want to think about."
