"Those humans made sure no one knew." Vanitas sneered. "Who would have believed a bunch of kids anyways?"
Vanitas had no one to go to back then who would have believed him. Especially considering what he was. A little demon child making up lies about the 'people who cared for him'. Besides, he had tried. Once. He was dismissed before words could even leave his mouth, before he could show them the proof on his very flesh that he was being experimented on. The constellations of scars and injection marks across his very being. He tensed when Moses hugged him, sitting uncertainly for a moment. He hesitated before awkwardly patting Moses' back.
"You sap," Vanitas accused but surprisingly without venom.

Moses frowned at him. "I would have believed you. Maybe I couldn't do much, but I would have believed you" suffering at the hands of his step-uncle was bad, he would have believed that there were scientists hurting kids. Scientists were mostly human in his experience, and if they could experiment on harmless animals he very much believed they could experiment on Other children. He smiled when Van sort of hugged back. "I'm not going to let anyone hurt you again" he stated. "and if that makes me a sap, then I'll happily be called a sap" he knew there was no venom in the words. Vanitas was showing he cared in his own strange way.

"Doubt it. When we first met we beat the shit out of each other, remember?" Vanitas reminded him.
He wanted to believe that Moses would have seen what Vanitas had been through as a child, but he had been so dependent on himself for so long. It still bothered him that he needed to rely on Moses for safety and shelter or even food. He sighed to himself, smoothing a hand through his hair. He was still trying to come to terms with things, the feelings that Moses seemed to bring to the surface.
"You can't promise something like that," Vanitas said.

"Yes, but you were a smarmy asshole who was pushing me, and I was dealing with nightmares of murdering children" Moses murmured. "As a kid I was far less trusting of adults and gravitated towards darker things. If I hadn't been trying to stay and appease my aunt and uncle, I probably would have ended up in your orphanage, being orphanage bound was a threat heaped on me many times in that short visit to my personal hell" He laughed bitterly. "If our paths had crossed and you had shown me proof, I would have believed you. I know that for a fact" Moses leaned back and stuck his tongue out at Vanitas. "I can to promise something like that. Because I just did" he replied cheekily.

"There were other orphanages in town. There was no promise that you would have been in mine." Vanitas said.
He wouldn't have wished that on anyone. Especially not Moses of all people. He didn't want to think about Moses getting experimented on like he was. To be cut open or injected with Sapien. There was no telling what the drug could have done to a Halfling. Some kids died. Sure it was chalked up to accidents and the common accident. Vanitas couldn't even remember the other kids' names. Just the numbers they were given. He was unlucky thirteen.
"No," Vanitas denied, "You can't promise it because you can't protect me from everything."

"But there's still a chance I would have been" Moses shook his head. "It doesn't matter though, what happened happened. I'm just glad we got together" Moses sighed. "Okay, fine. I'll protect you from as much as I can for as long as I can, okay?" He went to hug Vanitas again and smiled and kissed his cheek. "Love you dear"

"I... don't want to talk about it anymore."
He hadn't spared anyone. Not even the kids he had been 'close' to. He hadn't wanted them to suffer through their existences already. They had been in so much pain. He hadn't even been sure how he had gotten out to start his first killing spree. Only that he had. It had been a blur. He supposed back then it was adrenaline kicking in. Had Moses been there too, Vanitas would have killed him as well, no second thoughts. Because he would have seen it as a mercy.
"You're impossible," he sighed, but allowed both the hug and the kiss. "I... care for you too."

"Okay, we'll stop talking about it" Moses allowed. Though he wanted to bring both their pasts up again later. These were things that needed to be talked about. Moses smiled cheekily at his boyfriend. "I know, but you love me for it" staying on the side of optimism was his biggest trait. He raised an eyebrow but allowed Van's weak attempt at returning the feelings. He was trying, which was more than he had been a while ago. "I know you do" he said instead of the teases that came to mind. "And that makes me happy"

"We can keep talking but just not about the experiments." Vanitas sighed.
Moses did want to know more about him. Vanitas was trying to make himself more comfortable with sharing these things with him. He was trying to hold onto the feelings. Things like that were fleeting. Despite Moses bringing the emotions to the surface, he had to grasp onto them tightly in order to keep them. It was frustrating.
"Is there anything else you want to know?"

"Well..." sex life for either of them was probably one of those things they'd never feel comfortable talking about so that was out, despite Moses' curiosity who Van's first love would be-if he even had one. For Moses it was a young man by the name of Eric, who had died when they were eighteen. Couldn't pay his debtors and had paid with his life. It had left Moses heartbroken and leaving the controls and impulses up to his demonic side. "When did you get affiliated with the Grey Dawn?" he asked finally. "I mean, you hate humans. Why would you work with them?"

"After I got out," Vanitas replied. "I found out that the scientists had been feeding Grey Dawn the information of their 'cure' for Others. I wanted them to suffer too."
It had been disgusting to side with the Grey Dawn idiots. After their downfall, he had gone out and purged the city of most if not all of them. He hated having to pretend to be nice with them and agree with their cause. Or rather just say he was only helping because he was bored and wanted a little chaos. He was doing it as revenge for what had happened to him. He didn't care who got in his way but he had tried everything he could to get back at those people.
"I had intended on betraying them the entire time. Giving them exactly what they wanted up until the point where they trusted me enough not to check the batches I'd give them. After that, I gave them a poison that would only kill humans."

Moses' eyes narrowed. "You wanted to purge all of the humans? What about the half humans? like me? we would have gotten really sick, we might have even died" He wasn't mad at Vanitas per se, but the train of thinking was dangerous. "More kids would have died, parents would have died leaving little ones to fend for themselves like you and I. What was the sense?" he shook his head and sighed. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry. You wanted your revenge and I get that, but maybe just attacking Grey Dawn would have been better?"

"I realize that now," Vanitas said.
He had just been so angry when he got out and for many years afterwards that he put all of his time and energy into his plans. Admittedly, it was highly flawed. He hadn't thought his actions through all the way. Innocent people would have died. Kids like him would have been left alone. He ducked his head. In a way, he felt a strange prickle of relief when he realized that he had been stopped. But that was only after Moses sat him down and called him out on his bull shit.
"But I had suffered at the hands of humans for an entire decade. I didn't think the species was worth redemption."
Moses had changed that but that got into that sappy zone that Vanitas didn't want to touch with a twenty foot pole.

"I suffer at the hands of Others and humans alike for being half and half" Moses countered. "I didn't think anyone was worth saving, but I still try to see the good in people. It's hard, like really hard but what choice do I really have? I do it to give myself peace" he sighed. "I guess I can't blame you, but I can't condone it either. Just so long as you realize it was wrong I'm happy, okay?" he smiled. "What made you think humanity was worth it? He was pretty sure he knew.

"Can't you just be happy I decided not to try another killing spree?" Vanitas groused. "Why is it so important to know the reason?"
He shifted uncomfortably in his spot. Sure they agreed to no more hidden secrets. They agreed to be honest with one another and explain themselves. Vanitas felt like he was being interrogated. He hadn't the best of histories when it came to things like that. Moses kept trying to draw Vanitas out, getting him to confess over and over the 'feelings' he had.
"It was you, okay?" he grit out, "Humans can't entirely be a lost cause if they have someone like you."
